Is Bakuchiol Better Than Retinol?

 

Not exactly and "better" is the wrong question. In the most-cited head-to-head trial, a 2019 randomized, double-blind study in the British Journal of Dermatology, bakuchiol and retinol produced comparable improvements in wrinkles and pigmentation over 12 weeks, but bakuchiol users reported less scaling and stinging (Dhaliwal et al., PMID 29947134). So bakuchiol isn't a stronger retinol; it's a gentler compound that reached a similar finish line in one study. Retinol still carries the deeper, decades-long evidence base. Bakuchiol's edge is tolerability, which matters most for sensitive or reactive skin. If you already tolerate retinol well, there's little reason to switch. If retinol leaves your skin raw, bakuchiol is a research-supported alternative worth understanding before you choose.

 

 

What Is a Retinoid?

 

"Retinoid" is the umbrella term for vitamin A derivatives, including retinol, retinaldehyde, and prescription tretinoin. These molecules bind to retinoic acid receptors in skin cells and, in plain language, tell those cells to behave more like younger skin: speeding cell turnover, boosting collagen production, and fading uneven pigment. Retinol is the over-the-counter workhorse of this family. It has one of the longest and deepest evidence bases in all of skincare for improving fine lines, texture, and photoaging. That track record is exactly why it remains the dermatology benchmark. The trade-off is well documented: retinoids commonly cause dryness, flaking, redness, and stinging, especially during the first weeks of use, and are not recommended during pregnancy.

 

 

What Is Bakuchiol?

 

Bakuchiol is a plant-derived compound (a meroterpene phenol extracted from the seeds and leaves of Psoralea corylifolia, a plant used in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine). Here is the crucial distinction: bakuchiol is not a retinoid. It shares no structural resemblance to vitamin A. What makes it interesting is functional, not chemical. In a 2014 gene-expression study, bakuchiol regulated many of the same collagen-related pathways as retinol like upregulating collagen types I, III, and IV in human skin cells, despite being a completely different molecule (Chaudhuri & Bojanowski, PMID 24471735). Researchers described it as a "functional analogue" of retinol, meaning it engages some overlapping downstream targets while traveling a different route to get there.

 

 

Bakuchiol Benefits: What the Evidence Supports

 

The research on bakuchiol is genuinely promising, if younger and thinner than retinol's. Bakuchiol has been shown in peer-reviewed research to support collagen synthesis and improve photoaging measures like fine lines, elasticity, firmness, and pigmentation with less irritation than retinol. The 2014 mechanistic work paired gene-expression data with a 12-week clinical arm showing improvement in lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, and elasticity without typical retinoid side effects. The 2019 trial then tested it directly against retinol and found no statistically significant difference in wrinkle-area or hyperpigmentation improvement between the two, while retinol users reported significantly more facial scaling and stinging (PMID 29947134). Bakuchiol is also more photostable than retinol and carries antioxidant activity. For sensitive, reactive, or retinol-intolerant skin, that tolerability profile is the headline benefit.

 

 

The most underreported finding: in the 2019 head-to-head trial, bakuchiol matched retinol on wrinkle and pigmentation improvement yet the two molecules share no structural resemblance at all. Comparable outcomes, entirely different chemistry.

 

 

Bakuchiol Side Effects

 

Bakuchiol is generally well tolerated, and that gentleness is its defining feature, but "gentle" is not "inert." Reported side effects are uncommon and mild, and can include dryness, mild stinging, or irritation, particularly at higher concentrations or when layered with other actives. Allergic or sensitivity reactions are possible, as with any botanical extract; a patch test before first use is sensible. The 2019 trial recorded fewer tolerability complaints for bakuchiol than retinol, but not zero. As with any new active, introduce it gradually and watch how your skin responds over the first two to three weeks.

 

 

Is Bakuchiol as Good as Retinol?

 

For tolerability, bakuchiol may be the better fit. It delivered comparable results with less irritation in direct comparison. For depth of evidence, retinol remains ahead: it has been studied longer, across more trials, at more concentrations, than any retinol alternative. So "as good as" depends on what you're optimizing for. If your priority is the most-proven active and your skin tolerates it, retinol is the benchmark. If your skin reacts to retinol, or you simply prefer a plant-derived option with a gentler profile, bakuchiol is a research-supported choice, not an identical substitute, but a legitimate one.

Can I use bakuchiol and retinol together?

 

Yes. Some formulations pair them, and the pathways overlap rather than conflict. Combining can offer retinol's proven potency with bakuchiol's calming, photostable profile. Introduce them slowly and watch for irritation, especially if your skin is sensitive.

 

Is bakuchiol safe during pregnancy?

 

This is important: bakuchiol has not been confirmed safe in pregnancy. While retinoids are avoided during pregnancy, that does not automatically make bakuchiol safe. The data is limited and it has not been formally studied in pregnant populations. Consult your OB-GYN or dermatologist before using any active while pregnant or breastfeeding.


How long until bakuchiol shows results?

 

The clinical studies ran 12 weeks with twice-daily use. Expect a similar timeline. Meaningful changes in tone and texture typically take 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use.


What concentration of bakuchiol is effective?

 

The pivotal studies used 0.5% bakuchiol. Most well-formulated products fall in the 0.5%–1% range. Concentration matters, but so does formulation quality and consistency of use.
